Kill Your Darlings – The Art of Rethinking

Why it’s important to listen to user feedback and let go of cherished ideas in order to build successful products.

Kill Your Darlings

In (startup) development, it is essential to listen to user feedback and act on it — especially when it’s hard to throw beloved ideas overboard.

Adapting to User Feedback

User feedback on an app or product is indispensable and sometimes tough to accept, particularly when it forces you to rethink your assumptions. But this is exactly what ensures alignment with people’s real needs — and ultimately leads to a product that actually works.

Focus on the MVP

Every feature is filled with passion and conviction. The decision is difficult, but the right one: the entire feature gets removed. We focus on the absolute core of the business.

At the end of the day, only one thing matters for a profitable business: satisfied customers. No matter how painful it may be when an idea doesn’t resonate, it’s crucial to go back to the roots. From there, the product can be rebuilt and evolved again — guided by user feedback.

Learning and Evolving

Putting your own perspective aside is key. It’s a continuous process of learning, adapting, and sometimes letting go. But that is exactly what defines the journey of a startup — and probably applies to any other company as well.

I hope this food for thought is useful to you; it helped me a lot recently. Many thanks to Sven Zimmermann!
